Cycle Song
SCJC are delighted to be working with Proper Job theatre company on a co-production of Cycle Song, a brand new choral opera. Our Musical Director Susan Hollingworth is working alongside Director James Beale of Proper Job on the production.
Cycle Song has been commissioned by SCJC, Proper Job and imove http://www.imoveand.com/ a Cultural Olympiad Programme for Yorkshire, and celebrates the life and achievements of Albert ‘Lal’ White.
Lal was a steelworker from Scunthorpe who worked in the steelworks by day and trained on his bike in his spare time, winning countless trophies, including a silver medal for cycling at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games.
The libretto has been written by the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan, and the score composed by Tim Sutton. The wonderful songs in the opera celebrate both Lal’s amazing achievements and our local heritage, with scenes set at the steelworks and on the Scunthorpe streets.
Cycle Song will premiere in two spectacular performances on 14th-15th July at Brumby Hall in Scunthorpe, with SCJC performing alongside over 1,400 North Lincolnshire school children, choir members, musicians and dancers and a cast of professional opera singers.
